Environmental Health, Our Primary Health

What is environmental health?

The relationship between humans and nature is symbiotic; human impacts nature, and nature affects humans. We don’t see it every day, but nature affects our daily lives. Environmental health is a branch of public health that works with relationships between people and their environments. It is a field that monitors physical, chemical, and biological factors that we might not have control over, but they impact us.

Examples of environmental health from our day-to-day lives

We all drink water, don’t we? We prefer clean drinking water, but we take it for granted until we read about some cities with a toxically high level of lead in water, causing different diseases. Water directly affects our health and wellness, which makes it part of environmental health. Like water, air quality and air pollution are highly affecting ecological health.

Air pollution can damage crops and trees in a variety of ways. Air quality index and air pollution are directly linked to decreased happiness and satisfaction with oneself and life. It also reduces lifespan and causes specific diseases.

Another example of hurricanes, earthquakes, and typhoons can directly impact human life, the living environment, and surrounding areas. One of the examples which we all might not know about is neighbourhood safety.

It is an aspect of it. For example, if we live in an unsafe neighbourhood, we might not feel safe going outside, which means we spend less time outdoors and more time indoors, which means we get less exercise which affects our health physically and mentally.

Unlike diet and exercise, environmental health cannot be addressed at an individual level, and it affects our healthy living.

Ways to improve environmental health

To maintain a healthy life, there are multiple solutions. Replace plastic bottles with reusable water bottles since it impacts the food chain, which makes it an environmental problem. Reduce the use of allergens and improve air quality.

Create a stress-free zone around the house. Walk and pedal whenever it makes sense to maintain healthy living. We can understand that environmental health has seven major concepts: toxicity, exposure, dose, individual susceptibility, risks and benefits, environmental justice, and community resources and action.

Environmental health management should be taught in our daily lives because preventing environmental pollution can save lives because Environmental health is primary health.
